What you need to taste in your visit to Foinikounta includes:

The countryside of Messenia is dotted with large and small family owned vineyards that produce their own wine. Some even preserve age-old methods of grape crushing, the first step in the art of traditional vinification. These vineyards also produce the well-known balsamic vinegar.

Planted in Messenia by Herakles, the olive tree seems to have found its earthly paradise here. Messinian is one of the most important olive varieties and is used exclusively for oil production. It is a very productive, hardy variety and produces fine quality oil with excellent aroma and taste. Olive oil, the “liquid gold” according to Homer, is the protagonist of the Mediterranean diet and is a great nutritional treasure with numerous advantages for human health.

It has been a popular fruit and main ingredient of the Greek diet since ancient times. Greek athletes at Olympia ate figs to increase their running speed and overall strength. In Greek mythology, the fig figures prominently as a gift of Dimitra to Dionysus. Figs are rich in carbohydrates and are an essential source of energy for the human body due to their high content of calcium, phosphorus, iron and fiber. In Akritochori and Finikounta you can find a huge number of the most delicious figs in the area. You can find them fresh or dried.

The confectionary stars at any wedding in Messenia are honey curls called diples, Their history gets lost back in time, diples folded, deep fried, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and crushed walnuts, is a well known traditional Messenian dessert. Diples are served in New Year’s Eve, but are best known in weddings (as a symbol of the couple’s sweet life together), engagements and baptisms.

Messenia is a region that produces excellent honey. The best is said to be from Mount Taygetos, where the rich flora enables bees to make an aromatic and highly flavorful honey.
